Teaching Students to Study God's Word

One of our greatest desires is to teach the next generation to love the word of God. We encourage them to read their Bibles, memorize scripture, and have a quiet time. But have we ever shown them how?

Some students can be intimidated by the Bible. Unsure how to navigate such a timeless and precious book. We must equip them with the tools necessary to grow in their walk with Christ.

A simple tool for studying scripture is the HEAR method. (Highlight, Explain, Apply, Respond). This simple acronym helps students dig deeper into the word of God, allowing them to meditate on His word and listen for God’s voice. Our prayer is that this will develop a hunger and passion for studying scripture.

Highlight

Students should choose a passage of scripture and pick out one to two verses to break down. Record those verses in their journal.

Explain

Write down what’s happening within these verses. Encourage students to look at the context in which the verses were written. What does this scripture tell me about God and His character?

Apply

How can I apply what I’ve learned about God to my life? How can I use these verses to become more like Christ?

Respond

Write down your response to God. This can be a short prayer or simple statement about what God taught you through His word.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” -Hebrews 4:12
