Getting to Know You!
A Quiz Game for Any Size Group!
Here’s How You Play!
Here’s the backstory. There is this old song “Getting to Know You” that is ridiculously catchy ) I think it’s originally by James Taylor but I would always end up with the John Lithgow version in my head. You can listen to it here. One Wednesday night I was trying to come up with a game idea and guess what song was meandering around in my brain? You guessed it…Getting to Know You.
I had a couple middle schoolers show up early and I just came up with six random questions and I asked one of them (with some funny and interesting things about THEM!). I made the questions Multiple Choice and created the “Getting-to-Know-You Quiz!” I quickly designed a note card with 6 spaces on it for answers (one for a tie breaker), numbered them, and printed them (required a little cutting which I tasked to these early arrivers). I then put a quick ProPresenter presentation together with each question and answers, downloaded the John Lithgow version of the song to play at the beginning of the game, and voila!
That night I explained the game, invited the middle schooler up that I interviewed and had him sit on a chair on the stage, played the song, handed out the cards and pencils, walked through the ProPresenter (as the kids all debated which answer was right or bragged that they knew the right answer, or laughed at the ridiculous answer), and so on. At the end I went question by question, gave them the right answers and had them put the number of questions they answered correctly somewhere on the card. Then, I had them all stand and I said “Okay, if you got at least ONE question correct, stay standing.” and so on. If there was a tie at the end I had the question prepared (which was a “buzzer-style question” where they had to raise their hand or clap or whatever.). I always had a prize for the winner.
THE KIDS ALL LOVED IT!! And here is the sweet deal: they just got to know one someone in their group that they might not know. And the boy that was on the “hot-seat” for the night, was GLOWING! He laughed, felt like a superstar as people asked him questions about having a big scar from getting bitten by a dog; it was amazing. It’s not just for cool kids. It’s for everyone. And everyone gets to enjoy it regardless of what side of the game you’re on.
Oh, and they loved it so much, we didn’t stop doing this game for A YEAR. Every Wednesday night, it was on.
So, there you go! Have fun with it! The ZIP file includes the Title Graphics, the Blank Graphics (if you need them), the logo file and the Quiz Cards ready for you to send to print (or cut and print yourself if you do the 8.5x11). Get to know your kids and enjoy watching them get to know each other. Maybe you’ll put yourself on the Hot-Seat a few weeks in, yeah?
